Indexes - Behaviour on UPDATES

I would like to know what happens in the sense of performance when a non-indexed column in a table is updated. Is there any need to drop the indexes first to UPDATE that non-indexed column and then rebuild them later. Please note that its a non- indexed column that I am updating and for that reason I'm not sure if leaving indexes in place will negatively impact on the UPADATE process speed. Another thing, I'm updating more than 10million rows. The environment is not OLTP.

Many thanks,
