How can we change the default length of DateTime field in SQL Server

created_date DATETIME

By default SQLServer sets the maximum length of this field to 23 i.e. precision of this column is 23 when I executed sp_columns procedure. Is there any way to change the maximum length of this field to some other value lets say 14.
